I'm usually one who gets super excited about starting something, going in completely and enthusiastically... And then quitting after a couple of weeks. House cleaning programs like Fly lady. Self betterment programs like 101 in 1001. Everything I seem to try, I can't sustain.

Until a friend introduced me to Finch.

I don't know what it is about this app, but I've only missed one day in 614. It feels like an accomplishment. I'm not nearly as gung ho as I was. At one point, I had around 70 tasks to do every day. Most of them are simple, but can be tough when I'm the throes of depression. Like "Get out of bed". In the beginning, I was doing all these tasks every day. When I found that I could change how often I did some of the tasks, I paired things down, put most of the writing related tasks (like "Ask a friend what good qualities they think you have") less regularly - once a week, once a month, etc. It changed from being a chore back to something fun.

I've had friends that have started Finch, some for awhile and others giving it up after a couple weeks. I like being able to share goals, give me some accountability. And it makes me smile when I send them gifts through the app. Especially when I get a gratitude message from them.

The problem is that Finch is great for my mental health but trying to get other responsibilities and things I want to do doesn't for as well. When I was younger, when the kids were younger, I had a weekly cleaning schedule that I kept. I made time to work on creative things. I was part of more communities. I played regular D&D. Now I'm having truffle scheduling anything and keeping to it

My therapist is helping me with this, though I haven't been working with him long. He's good at reminding me to take baby steps with things. It's teasing out the baby steps that's the hard part.

I'll get there. Eventually. I just have to remember one of the mantras I use. "Every step gets me closer to where I want to be, regardless of how small the step is."

I took today as pretty much a day of rest. I didn't sleep well at all last night. I'm hoping tomorrow is a better day for getting things done. But I'm reminding myself that as long as I get back up, I can handle stumbles. And tomorrow is another day to show how awesome I am.

Part of why I didn't get in the mental mindset for cleaning was that I thought I was going to have more work done on my mouth at the dentist today. I was expecting that they would be putting in the posts for my dentures and that I'd be in a lot of pain. Instead, the dentist just checked to make sure I'm healing nicely. Apparently, it's going to take longer than I expected. It's going to take a few months for my jaw and gums to heal enough to finish the work. But, having seen the dentist, I now know that I can put my teeth in daily. I just hadn't been sure and didn't want to damage anything. But knowing that I can put my top plate in with the adhesive and, in a few days, I can do the same with my bottom plate. I just can't wait to to be able to eat hard things again. Which, honestly, I won't be able to do until the implants are in. I just don't have enough jawbone to hold the bottom plate in place.

I'm still thinking about what to write for Idol. Partner J is trying to help me brainstorm ideas of what to write about. It's more of a matter of I've got too much to write about instead of not having any ideas. I still have time to figure it all out. I also need to read what's up so far. Because I know there are going to be some great writing to peruse. Again, it's something I need to set to schedule. At least it's easier to read on my phone than writing on my phone is.

I didn't get outside for writing or enjoying the weather. I am trying to get better about doing the things that I need to do. Executive dysfunction is a bitch. I keep feeling further and further behind in the things that I really do need to get done. I have so many workbooks that should help with it, but that is part of the problem. Which one do I start with? So I, like with everything else, have no idea where to start.

I'm trying to put myself in the mindset of "If you do your chore, you'll get to do what you want as a reward." I know. Adults should know that. But somehow, like just about everything else with me, knowing what I should do and actually doing it aren't the same thing at all. But I'm trying to find workarounds that will help me be more successful.

I've got a lot of big projects around the apartment that I want to do, but I need to get back on top of the day to day cleaning. Today, I worked in my bedroom, a combination of the general cleaning and the deep cleaning. I spent a couple hours taking care of these things and I actually feel pretty good about what I got done. I have to spend more time on it tomorrow, but that's ok. I'm trying to remind myself that any amount of progress is a good thing. But sometimes it's difficult.

The topic for the first week is up. It's an open topic. I'm trying not to let my executive dysfunction get the better of me. There are so many things that I could write about. How do I even start?! Does anyone have any suggestions on something they'd like to know more about? I'm debating talking about my poly journey but what if I better prompt comes up later that will fit it? Or talking about being a supportive mom to my AMAB daughter? Or give -people a look into Nashville as I see it? So many thoughts are just coming through my mind. So many possibilities!

Tomorrow, Hubby is taking me to my dental appointment. I'm getting my implants in and, if I'm lucky, I'll actually be able to eat real food. Of course, I said that when I got my dentures to begin with. If this doesn't work, I don't know what I'll try next. My teeth were in such bad shape before, but I could at least eat some of my favorite foods. And if it weren't for the bottom plate, I'd probably be able to eat what I want now. I just keep hoping that this fixes it.

I really need to update my planner and look at what I've got going on this week. I don't think I have anything until Sunday, when I'm going to a Poly Education seminar that my poly group is putting on, followed by going out for karaoke with some of my local kink friends. I haven't been out for karaoke for too long. Not sure what I'm going to sing. But I know I'll have fun.

One of the other things I did do today was put together two of the second-rate Legos. One was a basket of flowers, the other a computer desk and chair. I was going to put together a third one, a cat on a cloud, but it was a lot more intricate than I'd originally expected. I've got another huge one that is waiting on me to put it together. It's a Japanese Maple. Part of it is the knowledge that it's going to take a long time to put together and I don't really have a good place to put it while I'm working on it. Especially if I want to get back to doing my epoxy resin. Which I do because I really want to make the hummingbird charm with my mom's ashes in them to wear around my neck.

I hate feeling as discombobulated as I am. I don't know why I'm having trouble, but I couldn't even read through my reading page today. Even my replies to comments weren't quite... right. Maybe I'm just tired. Maybe I'm just confused. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

Yes, stream of conscious is my way of writing and it gets even more strange and disjointed when I'm feeling this way. Anyone that read this far, thanks for sticking with me!

Hubby took the day off of work so he could follow me to the body shop where we're getting Pearl fixed. It's a local company with lots of good recommendations online. What I saw while we were there seems to indicate the recommendations were spot on. The person we spoke with took a look at the car, told me each thing that would need to be replaced (nothing unexpected) and warned that they wouldn't know for sure until they opened it up if there would be more work needed on the mechanical parts of the car. He quoted us $3800 and said my car must be unique - he couldn't find any of the parts for my car in their salvage database. I wouldn't have thought that 2022 was so new that they'd have trouble sourcing parts, but it may be the combination of the year, the hybrid, the color... who knows. Still, I'm happy with that price. We're going to have to move some money around, but at least we have it to move around.

It's finally not insanely hot.  It hasn't been for the last few days.  It's made my porch time so much more pleasant.  And today, I'm watching fat, dark clouds roll in.  I can smell rain on the wind.  This is why I'm glad that I have a covered porch.  Of course, next I really should get the tarp-like things that I bought to give me some privacy hung.  Then even if the rain comes sideways, I won't need to worry about it.  Being short with a family of other short people makes anything like this a production.  I really need to start up a master list of things I want to get done.

Honestly, I think that's why I write so many lists.  There's a dopamine hit that comes with crossing something off your list and knowing it's not coming back any time soon. The problem, as with everything, is prioritizing the time for it.  Right now, along with the "curtains" for the porch, I've got lights I want to put up, a big mesh holder to hang on the wall with all my stuffed animals, plus all the decluttering.  I've got to be better about setting and keeping to a schedule.

That's honestly one of my biggest problems when it comes to weight loss.  Because I can't seem to keep a schedule, I very regularly miss meals.  I don't overeat  as much as make poor choices in what I do it.  I had my first appointment with a medical weight loss doctor today.  The keeping to a schedule is one of the things that he brought up.  We're putting me on meds as well - the only time I've been successful in losing any significant amount of weight was when I was on Rybelsus, which (of course) isn't an option unless you want  to pay out of pocket.  Diet and exercise alone have never worked.  So we're adding a medication to pair with the Wellbutrin I've been taking for over 25 years to help control my emotional eating.  I am feeling proud of myself for not only eating lunch, but making a good choice for it.  Noodle soup with shrimp.  About 300 calories total. It's not hitting my protein goal for the meal - my doctor wants me to try to hit 30g of protein for each of the three meals.  I suspect I'm going to be going back to making homemade smoothies again.  Which isn't a bad thing. Especially as I'm trying to get my implants in place so I can actually bite into food again.

Speaking of, I have sutures in my gums for said implants.  And it's driving me insane because the tail is just hanging out there and my tongue keeps playing with it.  Ugh.  They're supposed to dissolve but I don't know how long that's supposed to take.

In about an hour, I'm leaving for my bi-weekly therapy appointment.  I've been in therapy on and off for the same 25 years I've been on Wellbutrin.  And I've had some really good therapists (the ones that have brought me to a catharsis without me realizing it) and some that were the worst (like the one that was leaving and told me I just needed to make a choice between my fiancé and my partner when I first came out as poly).  The one I have now.... I think he'll be a good one.  The therapist I'd had for the past couple of years left the practice and his clients went to a newly hired therapist.  My former therapist was about 2 decades younger than me, but very understanding and good at getting to the heart of things.  My new therapist is closer in age to me, which is not something I'm used to.  I like having that touchstone of commonality.  I suspect that today, he and I will be talking about my mom's memorial service a lot.  I was supposed to have an appointment last Tuesday, but I'd just gotten back from said trip and I was exhausted.

Later tonight, I'm getting date night with my long distance partner.  Ever since he moved to PA, we've made a habit of setting up a monthly Discord call to stay in each other's lives.  It helped keep our friendship alive while we were in the throes of his move and our break-up.  And I think, in a lot of ways, it got us back to where we're more than just friends and are actively being aware of our relationship.  I may ask him if he's ok with me writing about him if a prompt comes up that it seems to fit. Tonight, I'm going to see if talking on my laptop on the porch will work.  A lot of these date nights, we spend at least some of the time watching something.  We made our way through all of the fan-made Star Trek Continues and have been floundering a bit over the last couple of months.  We did find out that our library's Hoopla does have NuWho, which we'd been watching while he was still here before the break-up.  That's a possibility, but with today being Star Trek day, I'm hoping we can find something to watch together that fits in with that.  Or, who knows, maybe we'll just spend all the time talking.

I have so many things that my brain wants me to write.  My battles with my weight.  My therapy journey. What I've learned from being poly and how it's bettered my life.  But , as I said a few days ago, part of me is wanting to hold onto those kind of topics for future prompts.  I think I'm just suffering from too many choices.

It does make me want to be a bit more interactive.  What kind of things do you want to know more about with me regards to me and my experiences?  I suspect most of you will probably be thinking along the lines of "I'll find out when you answer about it for a prompt!"

Tomorrow, I've got to try to get some deliveries done in the morning, which means writing and replying will have to wait for the evening.  I've got a 5pm telehealth appointment with the surgical weight loss doctor, so it caps my timing a bit.  Though after the talk with the medical weight loss doctor today, I'm thinking I may cancel the appointment.  I want to see if medical can help me before surgical comes in.

And now, for Amber's non-sequitur of the day, I'm really in the mood for cake.  I blame GameChanger and Lily Allen.

Every time I start to think or write about plans, these words come to me.  They're from one of my kids' favorite books when they were young - Big Plans by Bob Shea.  That books was read over and over and over.  It may even be one of the ones they got from Dolly, but those days were so long ago.  Still, it's a book that was read so often that it's become synonymous with the thought of plans.

And this took me out on a tangent that probably didn't need to happen, but I've gotta be me.

Yesterday, I was planning on coming out to the porch to do some writing, reply to some comments, do some writing.  Instead, I came outside with my laptop bag, my phone and my drink.  And my laptop never came out.  I spent several hours on my phone playing various phone games.  I blame the fact that I got about 35 minutes of sleep the night before.  I felt a bit guilty for not writing, because I do have things I want to say, words that need to come out of my brain and through my fingers.  But I'm trying to give myself more grace when I don't hit my goals.  I'm trying to remember that I need to be about progress rather than perfection.  It's a tough lesson for me to learn.

I was also planning on doing deliveries last night.  My husband has been in the rabbit hole of his latest RPG obsession, a gaming system called Enclave.  It's perfect for him in a lot of ways because it's always small groups (no more than three or four players and the conduit (read GameMaster) and rarely lasts more than a couple hours.  The character creation system is much more simple than a lot of the heavy weights out there, which gives the perfect set-up for pick-up games.  Which means that many times when he's not working, he's got a game going.  Especially on the weekends. And honestly, I'm ok with that.  It gives me time to do my own things without feeling guilty, and he always checks to make sure he's not missing anything on the family calendar before saying he'll join or run a game.  So yesterday, I figured he had a second game in the evening and even if I hadn't done deliveries earlier in the day, I could do it that night.  But his game was cancelled because the person running it was dealing with a migraine.  And I realized that, since he was gaming Friday night and I was out at SourMix, we missed our weekly date night.  So we turned on Strange New Worlds and got almost completely caught up.  (Yes, our date nights are usually nights at home, in the bedroom, watching TV shows together.  Much easier on the wallet.) Personally, for all that I want to get back to making money, I think my time last night was better served spending quality time with my husband.

"Tomorrow morning," I thought.  "I'll do deliveries tomorrow morning."  But after two hours of sleep (yes, this is a common problem) and seeing that I had comments to reply to, I thought that I'd much rather go out and do a breakfast delivery for the family while Hubby was playing his morning game, and then actually do some writing outside.  The weather is starting to get a little cooler, and I really do love my space on my porch.  Well, if I can keep the ants off of me.  I need to find a better way to get photos somewhere I can share.  Because I can take them on my phone, but typing on my phone is a pain in the ass.  And it does get tiring going back and forth between the phone and the computer just to give anyone reading my words a look at the view of my calm, quiet parking lot.

Where was I?  Oh, yeah.  Deliveries.  Hubby has another game tonight, so I'm thinking of trying to get some deliveries in then.  I've found that holidays can be feast or famine in the gig delivery world.  I've had some holidays where I've been moving all over the county, making lots of money as I deliver everywhere from the ritzy areas of town to the areas that are more depressed.  And I've had some holidays where I spent more time waiting in a random parking lot in an area I am hoping to get a delivery in than actually going out and doing the deliveries.  I'm not really sure what kind of night tonight is going to be.  But if I don't take that first step to get back into it, I'll be dipping into savings for my trip to see my comet partner, which is not sustainable  And tomorrow, I'm not going to be able to do any deliveries because I've got two doctor's appointments and my monthly chat with my partner.  Wednesday, though, I should be back on track.  I hope.

What I really need to do is figure out how to make all of my plans fit together.  I've got so many things that I want to do.  I want to make money.  I want to write.  I want to do more epoxy resin work (especially the hummingbird in which I'll be putting some of my mom's ashes).  I want to have a cleaning plan in place to keep up with everything.  I want to start walking again to get more exercise (though, to be fair, I do get a lot of walking done when I'm doing deliveries). I want to find a local partner that I can spend more time with, and attend more local events. And I know that I can make all these pieces fit together.  I don't have to do all of them every day.  But my executive functioning is seriously dysfunctional.  I've got workbooks and notebooks all over the house to "help" me find a way that works.  Most of them have a page or two written in them and then they're off to the side.  I've definitely got to find a better way.

One of the big projects that I want to do is get my apartment organized.  It's hard to do when there are four of us, none of whom are particularly orderly.  I know I need to do it with baby steps, and I know that a lot of the things I have in the house really deserve better homes than mine.  But that's another piece of the puzzle that I need to figure out where to fit in. Sometimes, I think I just need a personal assistant whose sole job is to keep me on track.  But then I'd start to resent them and.... that would be a problem.  I wish I had more local friends with free time and that I'm not ashamed to have see the mess that is my apartment so I can get someone to body double for me.  But all of the friends that this used to fit have moved from the area.  I just need to figure out how to do it without help from others (well, other than talking about it all with my therapist every other week).

Maybe I'll take some time this afternoon, trying to put the puzzle together again.  Maybe I need to pull out my sticky notes and index cards so I can visualize a schedule.  Maybe I need to figure out priorities.  I've never been good at ranking things.  Or maybe I'll just keep winging it the way I have been not succeeding over the last 35 years.  But the big plans will always be there, waiting for when I have time to make them happen.

Gr I started my Livejournal somewhere around 1999. One of my best friends from high school had lost her ex-husband to suicide and posted about it.  I wanted a place to write, so I signed up and made.... one post.

Until there was a mass migration from message board I frequented (thanks, The Winter of Our Missed Content!) and I joined them.  I found myself writing more, sharing the boredom of my day, chatting with friends, and, most importantly, making new ones.  Gary poked me until I joined LJ Idol somewhere around season 3.  And then I wrote more focused things - particularly regarding my two growing children.

That's also what caused me to stop writing.  My life became hectic and insane. And somehow, all my creative outlets, including writing, fell by the wayside.

While I was on my way back from my mother's memorial, I was thinking about the changes that had happened to me in the last 20 years.  And then [personal profile] gnomeangel posted their intention to participate speaking of just this thing.  And it brought me back to thinking of those changes again.

20 years ago, I had a child that was less than a year old.  I was just starting a part-time job for a background check company.  I'd been in Nashville for a year, but I didn't have a lot of friends.  I was hoping that work would change that.  I was openly out as poly and was (I believe) flirting with a guy that became a long distance partner for awhile.  My dad and step-mom were moving to the area, so I'd have family nearby. I was 32 years old, had energy and not a lot of pain, and was dreaming of the life my child would lead.  I was hopeful and optimistic. I had ideas of where I'd be in 20 years, nebulous plans that I wanted to see happen.

Now, 20 years later, I'm looking back at how far I've come and how different my life is than I'd expected.

20 years ago, I mistakenly thought I had a son.  I was dreaming of him being successful in school, going to college, and making his way in the world away from me.  Now I know that my son is actually my daughter.  She knew it somewhere deep inside long before she admitted it to anyone else.  She was doing fairly well in school until COVID, when she got the relief from her social anxiety by doing school virtually.  And then she went back to in person, and the social anxiety blossomed.  She tried community college, but it didn't work for her.  Now we're just hoping to help her find a job and pray that, someday, she'll feel confident enough to live on her own.

20 years ago, I knew I wanted two children.  Ideally a girl and a boy, but healthy was more important.  (I got both a girl and a boy, it just took a bit longer for it to happen.)  My second child was born 2.5 years later.  I had many of the same hopes and dreams for him that I'd had for my eldest.  I had expected to have two kids in college at this time.  We first found out that my youngest had Sensory Processing Disorder when he was 4.  ADHD when he was 6.  Autism when he was 9.  He did well in school academically, but had a lot of challenges when it came to social.  And I found it much harder to connect with him.  Now he's a senior in high school.  I learned the hard way with my eldest that trying to force in person schooling for the socialization was the wrong choice.  For the last two years, he's been in a state-wide virtual school.  And it seems to fit him better.  Like his sister, I'm not sure if college is the path for him.  I'm not sure what path he'll choose.  We're still working on that.

20 years ago, I expected to be back in the northeast within 5 years.  That was the plan.  Come to TN, have my husband do his post-doc work at Vanderbilt, then get his own lab somewhere in the NE to be near more of our family.  The problem came when he realized that he didn't really want to do bench science.  We should have gone the teacher route.  But he has found a job, still at Vanderbilt, where he gets to use his degree and doesn't have him spending 18 hours at a lab bench.  He's been in his job for almost 17 years now.  He likes it, but it's a small field, which makes trying to find a job at another university difficult.  He has a tuition benefit for our kids, which is part of why we never seriously looked into moving before now.  But now that it looks like neither of the kids want to choose that path, it opens things up a little.  Over the last 5 or so years, I've wanted to move to the NE more than ever.  TN is a hostile place for my daughter.  And as much as I try to change things from the inside, it's getting disheartening to see her become othered. Add to that the fact that my dad and my step-mom both passed in the intervening years, and both our families are still in the NE.  Plus I've got a long distance partner and my poly family though him, and it makes the NE look so much more inviting.

20 years ago, I was baby-poly, making all the baby-poly mistakes.  But I knew that this was an important part of who I am, and I suspected that I'd have many partners over the years.  I was half-right.  In the beginning, I had several long distance partners.  Honestly, I didn't know where to look for local partners, and I knew I had things in common with the long distance ones.  But then came a 15 year hiatus.  I hadn't met anyone online (in part because I was losing a lot of the time I'd once had to be online to raise the kids) and I wasn't looking locally.  About 4 years ago, when my dad was in the hospital, I met someone that I was attracted to and, after much talk and figuring things out with my husband, started dating. I had a few casual dates, mostly local, one long distance.  And then a steady partner for 9 months until... well, that's a story for another time.  A few others that became friends more than partners.  Now I'm part of our local poly community, with lots of friends within that group.  I'm actually a volunteer with the group, which lets my bubbly personality invite more people in.  My only local partner at the moment is my husband, but my formally local partner and I (the one I was with for 9 months) are in a long distance/comet relationship where we chat every day and see each other a couple times a year.  I want another local partner, but I'm letting things happen naturally.

20 years ago, I'd started my part time job at the background check company. I was there for four years, including about a year where I was full time and my husband was a stay at home dad.  Then I tried my hand at teaching at a local parents day out.  I was there for about 3 years.  In the last 20 years, I've learned that traditional hour jobs aren't something that works for me.  Between depression and body pains, holding down a traditional job has been tough.  So I've joined the gig economy, doing food deliveries when I've got the body and the brain to do so. It gives me spending money to travel and see the people I want to see.

20 years ago, I had far less pain.  A bit of back pain, yeah.  But the knees, the wrists, the ankles.... I chalk every one of them up to getting old and not taking care of myself.  I'm trying to change that.

Sometimes I wonder if I was better off 20 years ago.  In some ways, yes.  I had far less pain.  I had a baby to snuggle.  My parents were still with me.  I was writing and being creative almost daily.  I don't know if I was happier, but I was different.  But in other ways, no.  20 years has brought me experience.  Given me a daughter and a son.  Given me a closer, more open and honest relationship with my husband.  Brought friends into my life that I never would have imagined having.  Made me wiser.  More compassionate.  More sure of who I am.  And I'm pretty happy with it.  Especially now that I'm coming back to my creativity again.
